Son nom chimique est 2-[(dipropylamino)sulfinyl]-N-éthyl-benzamide et son poids moléculaire est de 365,85 g/mol. Le modafinil a d'abord été conçu comme un stimulant pour le traitement de la narcolepsie, une condition caractérisée par des épisodes de sommeil excessifs et incontrôlables. Il produit des effets dans environ deux heures. Chez les enfants, la dose recommandée de modafinil est de 10 mg/kg de poids corporel.
