Le modafinil, ou 2-[(diphénylméthyl)sulfinyl]-acétamide, également connu sous le nom d'Alrex et EC-120, a été développé pour la première fois par les chercheurs français Michel Jouvet et André Lafon dans les années 1970. Des recherches menées en 2010 ont montré que certaines doses de modafinil peuvent améliorer les performances cognitives en augmentant la motivation et l'attention et en bloquant les effets somnifères de l'adénosine. Il est également approuvé en Europe pour traiter les troubles du sommeil liés au travail posté (somnolence fréquente pendant le travail posté en rotation) et en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande pour traiter les troubles du sommeil liés au travail posté (souvent à l'aide de siestes, de caféine et d'alcool). Le modafinil est l'un de ces médicaments et agit en inhibant un type spécifique de protéines appelées récepteurs de l'adénosine.
