McCarthy is an offensive-minded head coach who likely has his own ideas and coaches he wants to bring with him. Smith made the most of odd personnel in Pittsburgh in 2025, using all sorts of TE-heavy formations to make up for a lack of wide receivers beyond DK Metcalf. MORE: He's been a head coach in the NFL before, and it's interesting to see Smith head for a college gig that could at least temporarily change his career trajectory. Clearly, there isn't much of a better job opportunity than to be the OC at Ohio State. Smith will inherit Heisman finalist QB Julian Sayin and superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, along with stud freshman RB Bo Jackson who will be getting ready for his second season in Columbus.
