Forza Horizon 6 Won’t Launch? Black Screen Troubleshooting Tips - MistyWillow - 05-16-2026

If Forza Horizon 6 freezes or shows a black screen right after launching, don’t panic. This problem usually happens because of conflicting overlay apps, outdated graphics drivers, or corrupted game files. Many players see the game briefly in Task Manager before it silently closes. Follow these clear steps to get back on the road fast.
1. Disable Overlays and Performance Monitors
Third-party software running in the background is the most common culprit. These programs can clash with FH6’s graphics engine.
  • RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) & MSI Afterburner: Close them completely before launching the game.
  • NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience Overlay: Go to your NVIDIA settings → General tab → turn off In-Game Overlay.
  • Discord Overlay: Open Discord → User Settings → Game Overlay → turn off Enable in-game overlay.
2. Run as Administrator and Launch Directly
Sometimes the launcher itself causes issues. Running the game as admin can bypass these errors.
  1. Open Steam Library or Xbox App → right-click Forza Horizon 6 → Manage → Browse local files.
  2. Find ForzaHorizon6.exe → right-click → Properties → Compatibility tab.
  3. Check Run this program as an administrator → Apply.
  4. Double-click the file to launch directly.
3. Force a Specific Direct3D Version
Your GPU might struggle with the default API setup. Forcing a specific version often solves the black screen.
  • Open Steam Library → right-click FH6 → Properties → General tab → Launch Options.
  • Type
    Code:
    -dx11
    → try starting the game.
  • If the black screen persists, change it to
    Code:
    -dx12
    .
4. Verify Game Files and Clear Shader Cache
Corrupt game files or shader data can stop FH6 from loading.
  • Steam: Right-click FH6 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  • Xbox App: Click the three dots next to the game → Manage → Files → Verify and Repair.
  • Clear Shader Cache: Open NVIDIA/AMD control panel → temporarily disable shader cache → restart PC → re-enable it.
5. Check Antivirus Blocklists
Windows Defender or other antivirus software can block the game at launch.
  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings.
  2. Scroll to Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions → Add folder.
  3. Select your Forza Horizon 6 installation folder.

Following these steps covers 90% of black screen issues reported by the community. If the problem continues, consider updating your GPU drivers or reinstalling FH6 entirely to refresh all files.
