Le modafinil a une demi-vie d'environ 18 à 30 heures après l'ingestion. Le modafinil est un stimulant du SNC conçu pour améliorer la vigilance afin d'améliorer les performances pendant l'éveil. Il agit en bloquant une enzyme appelée recapture de la dopamine, permettant à la dopamine de rester dans le cerveau plus longtemps. Il y parvient en améliorant l'électroencéphalogramme (EEG) et en réduisant le sommeil paradoxal (REM).

Le modafinil est un composé ouvert en forme de T avec deux cycles benzéniques, l'éthylamine et trois groupes fonctionnels différents : une pyrrolidine, une pipérazine et un groupe 4-(1-méthylpipéridine). Le modafinil est également utilisé pour d'autres conditions. La réputation du médicament pour l'insomnie et l'anxiété sociale a fait hésiter Jouvet et d'autres cliniciens français à le prescrire à leurs patients.
